DESIGN
A sight to be held.
To create an iPad this huge, no detail was too small. From the way images are brought to life to its considerable versatility, we pushed every aspect of what’s possible with iPad to new heights. The end result, unmistakable the moment you begin using it, goes beyond a larger display. Unlike anything before it, iPad Pro is a far bigger experience.
5.6 million pixels. Each and every one a thing of beauty.
iPad Pro has the most advanced Retina display we’ve ever made. The 12.9‑inch screen offers 78 percent more display area than that of iPad Air 2. Under the glass lie a revamped Multi‑Touch subsystem and 5.6 million brilliant pixels, making it the highest-resolution display of any iOS device. That extreme resolution, along with remarkably lifelike colors and deeper blacks, makes everything from photo editing to intense 3D games more vivid and deeply engaging.
A huge leap of engineering in just 6.9 mm.
The Retina display on iPad Pro incorporates all-new technologies to enable unparalleled levels of precision and responsiveness. The Multi‑Touch subsystem was designed to accommodate two types of touch — your finger and Apple Pencil.
Photo Alignment
To improve on‑axis contrast, we used an advanced process called photo alignment. This involves shining UV light to create a uniform terrain across the film coating on the thin film transistor and color filter, so the display’s liquid crystal molecules lie precisely where they should. Better‑aligned molecules mean you see better contrast when looking directly at the display.
Oxide TFT
The resolution and scale of iPad Pro are far beyond that of our other iOS devices. That’s why we took cues from the groundbreaking oxide thin film transistor in the iMac Retina 5K display and adapted it for the Retina display on iPad Pro. The resulting TFT provides faster pixel charging and better brightness uniformity across the larger canvas.
Variable Refresh Rate
For the first time in any of our devices, iPad Pro knows when the content on your screen is static and cuts the refresh rate in half, to 30 times per second instead of 60. This means that the screen isn’t just big, beautiful, and bright. It’s also incredibly energy efficient.
Timing Controller
The timing controller, or TCON, is the brains of the display. It tells each pixel what to do and when to do it. Since iPad Pro has 2.5 million more pixels than iPad Air 2, we custom designed the TCON to handle the greater resolution, giving it more bandwidth to allow incredible pixel control at lightning‑fast speeds.
Meet Apple Pencil. Made precisely for creativity.
A new Multi‑Touch subsystem in iPad Pro enables the striking capabilities and pixel‑perfect precision of Apple Pencil.* Using incredibly fine‑tuned pressure and tilt sensors, Apple Pencil instantly recognizes when you are pressing harder or shifting its angle. So you can vary line weight, create subtle shading, and produce a wide range of artistic effects — just like with a conventional pencil. But Apple Pencil does far more. It can be a fountain pen, a watercolor brush, and even a calligrapher’s nib.
An elegant form that’s exceptionally strong.
Despite having 78 percent more display area than iPad Air 2, iPad Pro feels reassuringly solid in the hand. The aluminum unibody is a perfect balance of lightness and uncommon strength.
Four Speaker Audio. Listen and you’ll see.
The iPad Pro has four innovative speakers that produce a stereo soundstage as enveloping as its display. For the first time, the speaker housings have been machined directly into the unibody enclosure. This new architecture gives the speakers 61 percent more back volume compared to previous iPad audio designs. You’ll hear a wider frequency range and up to three times more output than on any other iPad.
An incredible sound experience, no matter how you turn it.
The speakers in iPad Pro aren’t just high fidelity, they’re highly intelligent. While all four produce bass frequencies, the topmost speakers are dedicated to higher frequencies. They also automatically recognize whether the device is in portrait or landscape view. So you’ll always get vivid, well-balanced sound no matter how you’re holding iPad Pro.
The new Smart Keyboard. The only thing we didn’t reinvent was the alphabet.
The new Smart Keyboard for iPad Pro has all the utility of an ordinary full‑size keyboard, but its technology couldn’t be less conventional.* The surface is formed from a single sheet of custom‑woven fabric that has been laser ablated to precisely form each key. This unique construction ensures a satisfyingly responsive, accurate, and natural feel. Underneath that fabric lies a new conductive material that allows for a two‑way flow of power and data. That’s why you won’t find any batteries, cords, or on/off switches on the Smart Keyboard. And unlike traditional wires, the conductive fabric can withstand a lifetime of folding, though it’s nearly as thin as a sheet of paper.
More than a connector.
The Smart Connector is a new interface that takes advantage of the two-way conductive fabric in the Smart Keyboard. It allows iPad Pro to provide power to the Smart Keyboard and lets the Smart Keyboard relay each of your keystrokes back to iPad Pro. Using the Smart Connector couldn’t be easier. Simply align the Smart Keyboard to iPad Pro — just as you would with a Smart Cover — and start typing. Now there’s even less distance between what’s on your mind and what’s on the display.
TECHNOLOGY
Raw power. In its most elegant form.
The sheer performance of iPad Pro redefines everything iPad is capable of. Every technological element, from the new A9X chip to the graphics processor to the storage controller, has been designed to enhance each other for maximum performance and energy efficiency. iPad Pro isn’t just faster, smoother, and more engaging. It sets a whole new standard.
Our most powerful chip for our most capable device.
The uncompromising performance of iPad Pro is driven by some equally uncompromising technology. The A9X, our third-generation chip with 64‑bit desktop‑class architecture, gives iPad Pro the power to easily take on tasks that were once reserved for workstations and PCs. And tasks you’d never consider doing on a PC.
Despite this barrier-breaking performance, the A9X chip’s underlying architecture is efficient, ensuring that there’s one way in which iPad Pro isn’t massive — battery consumption.
64-bit architecture
A9X chip
Quicker work.
With 1.8 times the CPU performance of iPad Air 2, the A9X chip delivers incredible speed and responsiveness. So iPad Pro reacts to every gesture faster than ever. Even complex tasks like creating, rendering, and manipulating a 3D design or editing multiple streams of 4K video happen quickly and with unparalleled smoothness.
More beautiful play.
Despite having nearly twice the pixels in its Retina display, iPad Pro still offers up to double the graphics performance of iPad Air 2. You’ll see even the most intense visuals render with unmatched richness and speed. That speed, paired with the sheer size of the display, makes it easier than ever to lose yourself in your favorite movies and games.
The storage controller. The unsung hero of superfast performance.
The A9X chip is capable of processing data so quickly, it demanded a new memory architecture. iPad Pro features a revamped storage controller that helps deliver performance better than some desktop computers. This increases read and write speeds, so you can quickly open even the largest files. Like the big 4K movie you just edited or all the RAW images you imported from your HD camera.
Metal.
A real game changer.
Metal gets the greatest graphics performance out of the A9X chip and iOS 9, so developers can design highly immersive console-style games and blazing-fast apps. Metal optimizes the CPU and graphics performance to deliver detailed graphics and complex visual effects. So every imaginary world feels more realistic.
High-performance apps can now reach new heights.
Everything you can do on a desktop computer or gaming console is not only possible on iPad Pro, it’s possibly better. While the size and resolution of the display make every activity more immersive, the finely tuned Multi-Touch subsystem and A9X chip mean even the apps you use most will feel like nothing before.
iMovie
Shoot, edit, and share on a high-resolution screen that brings your videos to life. iPad Pro is capable of playing three simultaneous 4K video streams in iMovie, without losing its agile responsiveness to your every command. And everything looks brilliant in the 1080p viewer.
Adobe Photoshop Fix
Retouch photos on iPad with the power of Photoshop. Enjoy all the tools you need — and even some you might not expect — to edit, manipulate, and add new dimension to your photos. And Photoshop Fix supports up to 50-megapixel images, so you can make the most of the high-resolution Retina display.
AutoCAD 360
Architects and industrial designers can now take on the complex and demanding task of 3D modeling with ease. iPad Pro works with graphics-intensive apps like AutoCAD 360 to bring amazing depth and polish to sketches. So you can see your car design or building layout come to life in an easily portable format.
An incredible 10‑hour battery life.
You might expect that such high performance would compromise battery life. But even with its high-resolution Retina display and groundbreaking power, iPad Pro maintains great endurance and efficiency.
Fast wireless connectivity.
iPad Pro features 802.11ac Wi-Fi technology and MIMO, so you can easily connect to ultrafast networks and enjoy download speeds of up to 866 Mbps.
More cellular networks and LTE bands.
So you can be more productive anytime, anywhere, iPad Pro with Wi-Fi + Cellular supports 20 LTE bands.3
Supports 20 LTE bands
Up to 150 Mbps via LTE
Apple SIM. So many ways to stay connected.
The Apple SIM in iPad Pro with Wi-Fi + Cellular lets you purchase a cellular data plan right on your iPad. Whether you’re in the U.S. or traveling to more than 90 countries and territories supported by Apple SIM partners, you can get a plan with no long‑term commitment. And easily switch back to your local plan when you get home.
IOS 9
A better experience with every touch.
iOS 9 is the world’s most advanced, intuitive, and secure mobile operating system. If it feels like it was custom made for iPad, that’s because it was. From the elegant interface to powerful multitasking features and useful built‑in apps, iOS 9 is designed to help you get the most out of iPad.
Double up on productivity.
Slide Over, Split View, and Picture in Picture give you new ways to multitask on iPad. New QuickType features make formatting and text selection even easier — and put shortcuts right at your fingertips.
Slide Over
Now you can open a second app without leaving the one you’re in. So you can quickly browse the web, respond to a text message, or jot something down in a note, then slide that app away and get back to the one you were using before.
Split View
With Split View on iPad, you can go a step further and have two apps open and active at the same time. Work on a sketch with the reference photo beside it. Or write a paper while copying citations from a book in iBooks. When everything you need is right in front of you, it’s easier to focus.
Picture in Picture
While using FaceTime or watching a video, press the Home button and your video screen scales down to a corner of your display. Tap to open a second app, and your video continues to play — even while you use the other app. So keep watching your favorite TV show while you reply to the email that just came in.
Shortcuts at your fingertips.
Shape up your text in no time with an all-new Shortcut Bar, convenient editing tools, and a handy new way to select text with Multi-Touch gestures. And now when you use a wireless keyboard with your iPad, you can enjoy even more keyboard shortcuts.
Keyboard Shortcuts
Use keyboard shortcuts to perform even more commands on your iPad — like switching between apps or bringing up search with a wireless keyboard. And interact with your apps using their own built-in, custom shortcuts. Just press and hold a key like Command, Option, or Control to see shortcuts in any app.
Easy Text Selection
Control the cursor on your iPad by simply moving two fingers anywhere on the screen, including over the keyboard, to select, edit, and move text.
Built-in Shortcut Bar
Bold, italicize, or underline — even copy and paste — with just a couple of taps from your keyboard. The Shortcut Bar can also be customized for third-party apps, so the tools you need are always right where you need them.
Built-in features and apps that make your iPad – and you – more capable.
The powerful built-in apps on your iPad are designed for the essential things you use them for every day — mail, messages, web browsing, maps, making notes, and so much more. iOS 9 brings key enhancements to several of these apps, and introduces a brand-new one that will change how you experience news.
News
News collects stories from top sources just for you, all in one place. And the more you read, the more tailored to your interests your articles become. And publishers can create unique pieces complete with interactive galleries, videos, and animation — so it’s always a beautiful reading experience.
Notes
Now more than just text, the redesigned Notes app lets you include photos, maps, web links, and checklists — even sketches you can draw with just the tip of your finger. And with iCloud, you can keep your notes updated across all your devices, so you can easily access them no matter which device you’re using.
With powerful new features, Mail helps you stay in touch with people in more engaging ways — all from your iOS device. Use the Markup feature to add drawings, comments, or a signature to photos and documents. And easily attach files right from your iCloud Drive.
Camera
Take beautiful photos and videos with the touch of a button. Shoot in slo‑mo or create a time‑lapse video or epic panorama image. Take better selfies using the timer and burst mode. The timer gives you 3 seconds or 10 seconds to get ready, then takes 10 photos per second in burst mode.
Safari
Safari puts the focus where it should be: the web. When you open a web page, the address and navigation bars move out of the way until you need them. Bookmarks are easy to add and edit, and features like Reading List, Shared Links, and iCloud Tabs let you get to the content you need when you need it.
App Store
The App Store puts more than one million apps and games at your fingertips. Browse Featured Apps or categories like Music, Education, Kids, and more. Or tap Explore for app recommendations based on your interests and location.
iBooks
Download and read everything from classics to the latest page-turners. Add bookmarks and notes. Adjust the font size and background color for easier reading. And with iCloud, you can start reading a book on your iPad and continue on your iPhone, iPod touch, or Mac.
iMovie
iMovie makes it easy to browse and share the HD video you shoot on your iPad. Turn your favorite clips into blockbuster movies or Hollywood‑style trailers. And watch your mini‑masterpieces anywhere with iMovie Theater. A few taps, a few swipes, and you’re ready for your big premiere.
GarageBand
GarageBand is the most popular music creation app for iPad. And it’s easy to see why. You can play, mix, and record your own songs. Then share them — across the room or across the globe — with just a few taps. It’s never been so simple to create great music and get it out there.
Apps designed for iPad. And everything you want to do with it.
iPad apps are, true to their name, built just for iPad. You’ll find incredible apps on the App Store made to take advantage of every inch of the stunning Retina display and powerful capabilities of iPad. Whether you want to get more productive, play a great game, or edit photos, the App Store makes it easy to search and easy to buy.
A seamless experience across your iPad, iPhone, and Mac.
Each of your devices puts amazing capabilities in your hands on its own. But features like Handoff, AirDrop, AirPlay, and iCloud let you work across devices — and the possibilities become even more astonishing.
Handoff lets you pick up right where you left off.
Start writing an email on your iPhone and pick up where you left off when you sit down at your Mac. Or browse the web on your Mac and continue from the same link on your iPad. It all happens automatically when your devices are signed in to the same iCloud account. Use Handoff with favorite apps like Mail, Safari, Pages, Numbers, Keynote, Maps, Messages, Reminders, Calendar, and Contacts. Developers can build support for Handoff into their apps, too.
Send any kind of text message from any of your devices.
Having a conversation with friends and family who don’t use an iPhone is easy. That’s because you can send and receive SMS and MMS text messages with not just your iPhone, but also your iPad and even your Mac. So when a friend texts you from any kind of phone, you can respond using whichever device is most convenient. Or you can send them a text from your iPad or Mac by clicking a phone number in apps like Safari, Contacts, or Calendar.
AirPlay. Show it off on the big screen.
AirPlay lets you wirelessly stream what’s on your iOS device to your HDTV and speakers via Apple TV. Or mirror exactly what’s on your display to the big screen. From vacation photos to blockbuster movies — you choose how to go big.
AirPrint. Printing is simple. And wireless.
AirPrint makes it easy to print email and web pages from your iPad to your AirPrint‑enabled printer. To print an email, tap the Reply button and select Print. To print a web page, tap the Share button and select Print. You can also print photos, documents, and more.
Share files wirelessly with AirDrop.
Sharing with AirDrop is faster and more convenient than an email or a text, especially when the person you want to share with isn’t in your contacts. Just tap to send photos, videos, contacts — and anything else from any app with a Share button — to anyone nearby who’s also running iOS or OS X.
iCloud.
Everything you need.
Everywhere you need it.
iCloud makes sure all your devices always have the latest versions of your most important things, including documents, photos, apps, contacts, calendar events, and more.
Any kind of file. On all your devices.
iCloud Drive lets you access all your files from any device. With Family Sharing, all your photos, videos, music, and iTunes purchases can be shared easily with your family across multiple Apple devices. And iCloud Photo Library keeps every photo and video you take all in one place, and you can access them from your iPhone, iPad, iPod touch, or Mac and on iCloud.com.
Safety and security come standard.
iOS provides built-in security from the moment you turn on your device. That’s because the hardware, firmware, and operating system come with built-in features designed to help your device — and what you put on it — stay safe.
Security
Malware and viruses aren’t confined to desktops anymore. They can infect mobile devices, too. Which is why Apple takes security seriously when it comes to iOS. For starters, hardware and firmware features are designed to protect against malware and viruses, while iOS features help to secure your personal information. Two-factor authentication prompts you for a verification code when you sign in from a new browser or on a new device.* This code is automatically displayed on your other Apple devices or sent to your phone, so you can quickly gain access to your account, while unauthorized users are kept out. Touch ID lets you use your fingerprint as a passcode, preventing unauthorized access to your device. When you use a passcode, it automatically encrypts and protects information like your email, calendar events, contacts, reminders, notes, messages, and third-party apps.
Privacy
iOS is designed to put your privacy first. If an app wants your location information or data from Calendar, Contacts, Reminders, or Photos, it needs your permission first. And you have complete control of how Health and HomeKit use your data. Conversations over iMessage and FaceTime are encrypted, including predictive text — so no one but you and the person you’re talking to can see or read what’s being said. And features built into Safari give you the ability to browse privately, block cookies, and prevent websites from tracking you.
Find My iPad
Your iPhone is your iPhone, no matter where it is. The same goes for your iPad and iPod touch. Because security features in iOS make it very difficult for anyone who’s not you to use or sell your device. Turning off Find My iPhone or erasing your device requires your Apple ID and password. Find My iPhone can also continue to display a custom message, even after your device is erased. And your Apple ID and password are required before anyone can reactivate it.
iCloud Keychain
Most of the websites you visit nowadays require user names and passwords. Remembering them all can be tough, but you can let iCloud Keychain do it for you. It stores your website user names and passwords on the devices you’ve approved, protects them with robust 256-bit AES encryption, and keeps them up to date on each device. Then it automatically fills them in whenever and wherever you need them. Password Generator can even suggest unique, hard-to-guess passwords for your online accounts. iCloud Keychain works with credit card information too, so checking out takes no time at all.
